‘Remembering America’s Gun Victims’ – Uziyah Garcia (Uvalde, Texas)

Uziyah Sergio Garcia last visited his grandfather Manny Renfro in San Angelo during spring break. They threw a football together, and Renfro was teaching him pass patterns.

“Such a fast little boy and he could catch a ball so good,” Renfro told the Associated Press. “There were certain plays that I would call that he would remember and he would do it exactly like we practiced.”

The 10-year-old was among 21 persons whose lives were cut short in a mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022.

Uziyah was “the sweetest little boy that I’ve ever known,” Renfro said.

“Uzi”, as he was called by friends and family, attended Day Head Start and TLCA in San Angelo, said his official obituary which described him as a loving, sweet, outgoing, energetic, and smart child.

“Uzi loved his family and Jesus,” his family said on his obituary. “He loved his cousins and brothers from another mother very much. He loved playing Nintendo Switch and Oculus. He was competitive, but kind and fair. He loved running, jumping on trampolines, swimming, football, gorilla tag, and vacationing with his Aunt Grace and Uncle JR and the Molina family.”

The family said it will forever miss Uzi, mostly his contagious laugh, shaggy hair, and silly jokes.

“We will miss saying [to him], “I love you and Jesus loves you”, [and hearing] especially his reply, “…and Jesus loves you too!’ “
