It was uncharacteristic of her, but Jailah Nicole Silguero told her parents she did not want to go to school the morning of May 24, 2022, when a mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas would claim her life.
Jailah asked her father if she could stay home; he told her it was up to her mother, who eventually dropped her off at the school.
“She always liked going to school, but she didn’t want to go yesterday,” Jailah’s mother Verónica Luevanos later told Univision. “I think she knew something was going to happen.”
Ten-year-old Jailah was among 21 persons whose lives were cut short in that mass shooting.
Another fatal victim on that day was Jailah’s cousin, Jayce Carmelo Luevanos, who was also aged 10.
Jailah’s mother said her 10-year-old loved dancing and watching TikTok videos.
Jailah often spent her time outdoors, she said.
