Eva Mireles’ husband, Ruben, was a police officer in charge of active-shooter drills at the Uvalde High School in Texas.
Tragically, he could not come to her aid when a real shooter emerged at the elementary school in Uvalde where she taught.
On May 24, 2022, Eva and 20 others had their lives cut short by a mass shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary.
Forty-four year old Mireles had worked as an educator for 17 years. Many in the small-knit community of Uvalde have been her students.
The fourth-grade teacher would call her daughter, Adalynn, at about 4:30 p.m. every afternoon as she left the school campus. On Tuesday, Adalynn’s phone did not ring.
Adalynn recalled her mother’s hands and the calluses she had developed because of her routine CrossFit workouts. Adalynn often called on her mother to check on the chicken she cooked. They would sing karaoke and reenact TikToks together.
“I don’t know how to do this life without you, but I will take care of dad. I will take care of our dogs and I will forever say your name,” her daughter wrote in a tribute on Facebook.
In Eva’s official obituary, she was described as someone who dedicated herself to her wonderful family and amazing students.
Her hobbies included Crossfit, hiking, and spending time with her dog, Kane, the obituary added.
“Her smile and personality never went unnoticed as when she was around, it was never a dull moment. She was an outstanding wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, and educator. Eva will forever live on in our hearts and memories,” her family wrote in the obituary.
